” Surah Nas “

SURAH NAS (سورة الناس) is the 114th and final chapter (Surah) of the Qur’an, consisting of 6 verses (ayahs). It is part of the Meccan Surahs, meaning it was revealed in Makkah, and it is often recited for seeking protection from evil.

The surah is named after the word “An-Nas” (The Mankind) mentioned in its verses, emphasizing Allah’s role as the Lord and Protector of humanity.

Key Themes:

  • Seeking refuge in Allah: The surah teaches Muslims to seek protection in Allah from the whispers of Satan (Shaytan) and other evils.
  • Description of Allah’s authority:
    • Allah is mentioned as the Lord (Rabb), King (Malik), and God (Ilah) of mankind.
  • Protection from the unseen: It addresses the dangers posed by unseen evils, especially the whispers that come into people’s hearts, whether from jinn or humans.

Text of Surah An-Nas (Arabic and Translation):

  1. قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ
(Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,”
  2. مَلِكِ النَّاسِ
    (The Sovereign of mankind,
  3. إِلَٰهِ النَّاسِ
    (The God of mankind,
  4. مِنْ شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ
(From the evil of the retreating whisperer—
  5. الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ
(Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind—
  6. مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ
    (From among jinn and mankind.”

Benefits of Reciting Surah An-Nas:

  1. Protection from harm and evil: It is often recited to ward off the influence of Shaytan and protect oneself from any kind of spiritual or unseen harm.
  2. Part of daily prayers: It is included in morning and evening supplications along with Surah Al-Falaq (the preceding chapter).
  3. Spiritual purification: It helps purify the heart and mind from negative thoughts and influences.

Surah An-Nas, along with Surah Al-Falaq, is known as Al-Mu’awwidhatayn (the two chapters of refuge) because both seek Allah’s protection from harm and evil.

Lessons and Practical Implications

  1. Faith in Allah’s Sovereignty: Surah An-Nas reminds believers that Allah alone controls all aspects of existence. Recognizing His power strengthens faith and reduces reliance on worldly protections.
  2. Combatting Negative Influences: The surah teaches believers to be vigilant against whispers that can disrupt their faith or relationships. It highlights the need for spiritual self-awareness.
  3. Unity in Seeking Refuge: The chapter’s universality encourages all of humanity to turn toward Allah, fostering a sense of shared reliance on the Creator.

Conclusion

Surah An-Nas is a concise yet profound chapter that encapsulates the essence of seeking Allah’s protection against unseen evils. Its relevance extends beyond specific situations, serving as a timeless reminder of human vulnerability and divine mercy. By regularly reciting this surah, believers affirm their dependence on Allah and strengthen their spiritual resilience in the face of worldly and otherworldly challenges.
